I finally finished reading Wallace Stegner’s Crossing to Safety aloud to Christophe this week. We detested it. It’s dull overall, with the only parts eliciting strong emotions in us being the relentless sexism and ableism. There’s a sparkling bit of antisemitism early on too that really leaves an aftertaste. The only good to come of this venture was our adoption, for unrecalled reasons, of the nickname “Mollusk Stegner” for the author, and my subsequent portrait of him:
